Mayor DeViet began the council meeting by congratulating Brent Eckenswiller, who will be representing the municipality at the Association of Ontario Roads Supervisors (AORS)’s Provincial Safety Truck Roadeo, on September 25, 2024, in Douro.
Mayor DeViet also took a moment to acknowledge and thank staff from across the municipality who are celebrating years of service milestones with Middlesex Centre in 2024.
Council then received an update from Chris Traini, Middlesex County Engineer, regarding the roundabout construction project at the intersection of Glendon Drive and Vanneck Road/Jefferies Road/Coldstream Road. This $6 million project will improve traffic flow at one of the County’s busiest intersections. Roundabout construction is expected to be completed by November, with sidewalks and landscaping completed in the spring of 2025. Mr. Traini reminded all drivers to follow the posted detours during construction. These can be found on the County’s website at https://www.middlesex.ca/departments/roads/glendon-drive-roundabout
During the meeting, Council:
- With respect to filling the vacant Ward 1 council seat, council directed the Municipal Clerk to move forward with the option to appoint the next-place finisher from the 2022 election, providing they are still interested and qualified to accept the office. Middlesex Centre council has previously used this method of filling a council vacancy in both 2016 and 2020. The Clerk will report back to the October 16 Council Meeting to confirm whether the individual has consented to accept office if appointed and is still qualified to accept office.
- Granted pre-budget approval for a two percent cost of living increase for employee wages effective January 1, 2025.
- Endorsed the consideration of Littlewood Drive from Bodkin Road to Fairgrounds Road for assumption into the County Road network.
- Awarded the Elmhurst and Parkland Place Detailed Design and Construction Administration to AECOM Canada Ltd. in the amount of $372,004.
- Awarded the engineering design, tender preparation, and contract administration for the Glendon Drive Watermain Twinning to Stantec Consulting Limited in the amount of $98,674.
- Received an update regarding Old River Road Project. Portions of the road are subject to flooding, and due to slope instability, are slipping towards the river. This update outlined the findings of recent engineering investigations and provided initial cost estimates for repairs.
- Authorized entering into a lease agreement with Elite Performance and Injury Clinic (EPIC) for the usage of the new addition to the Komoka Wellness Centre. Costs for construction will be borne by EPIC, with no cost impacts to the municipality.
- Endorsed Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO)’s call on the Province of Ontario to undertake a comprehensive social and economic prosperity review to promote the stability and sustainability of municipal finances across Ontario.
