Presentations

  • Ken Phillips, Greg Wilcox, and Girish Sankar from the St. Clair Region Conservation Authority were in attendance to provide an update regarding the decommissioning of the Coldstream Dam. Council directed staff to prepare a report outlining recommended options to proceed with the potential removal of the Coldstream Dam.
  • The Middlesex Federation of Agriculture was in attendance to provide a year-in-review summary for 2023-2024. As of 2021, there are 2,518 farms located in Middlesex Centre, 133 of which sell directly from their farms, at stands, or at pick-your-owns. Additionally, the local agri-food sector employed 28,715 people through 4,645 local agri-food business establishments.

In Brief

During the meeting, Council:

  • Received the 2025 budget process report, and appointed Councillor Berze and Councillor Cates to the budget working group.
  • Awarded the Fisher-Watt Municipal Drain tender to A.G. Hayter Contracting Ltd. in the amount of $95,298.50 + HST.
  • Awarded contracts for the loading and hauling of gravel from the municipal aggregate pit to local roads, and for the provision of bulk road salt for winter maintenance.
  • Received information on the Ontario Land Tribunal’s E-File Portal implementation.
  • Congratulated Middlesex Centre’s finance team for receiving a Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA - USA/Canada) for the 2024 Municipal Budget. This award recognizes municipalities that demonstrate the highest principles of governmental budgeting. It is the third year in a row that Middlesex Centre has received this award.
  • Received an update regarding progress on Middlesex Centre’s Fire Services Master Plan.
  • Directed staff to proceed with the establishment of a separate Committee of Adjustment. This Committee will make decisions regarding applications for severance and applications for minor variance on behalf of Middlesex Centre.
  • Approved several enhancements to the employee benefit program. Costs for these enhancements will come from the existing Employee Benefits Reserve and will not impact the tax levy.

The next regularly scheduled Middlesex Centre Council Meeting is set for Wednesday, June 19, 2024, at 5:30 p.m. Please note that council meetings will be held at the Ilderton Community Centre for the duration of the municipal office renovation.
