Update - May 16, 2024: The playground is open! An official "grand opening" opening is set for June 1.
About the Project
As part of the Municipality of Middlesex Centre's capital project improvements, the playground at Komoka Park is being rebuilt.
Weather permitting, construction is anticipated to begin in late September 2023, with an estimated project completion date of May 31, 2024 (subject to material availability).
Drawings and photos of the new play structures can be found at the bottom of this page.
Funding
The playground is being updated as part of the Middlesex Centre municipal budget. We are very pleased that the Optimist Club of Komoka-Kilworth are contributing an additional $60,000 to the project, which has allowed for more elements to be added to the play structure. We also want to thank Middlesex Paving & Maintenance for their donation of all of the asphalt to the project.
Project Schedule
This project will begin in the fall of 2023. Phase 1 of the project is anticipated to last 4-5 weeks. Installation of the new play structure will take place in spring of 2024. Note this schedule may be affected by weather and other unforeseen circumstances.
PHASE 1 – Fall 2023
This project will be done in two phases and will have the following work completed:
Remove the existing play structure and base and prepare subgrade for the installation of:
- a concrete playground curb including accessible curb cuts
- perforated drainage pipe
- a 1.8 metre wide asphalt pathway
- bench
- waste receptacle
- armour stone block seating
- trees
- final grading
It is anticipated that the existing play structure will be sold at auction in the fall.
PHASE 2 – SPRING 2024
Phase 2 will see the supply and install of the new play structure followed by the installation of the playground base (engineered wood fibre). This structure is getting additional elements beyond what was in the municipal budget thanks to a $60,000 donation from the Komoka-Kilworth Optimists.
Installation of the playground is scheduled to start the week of May 6, 2024 (weather permitting).
Alternative Playgrounds During Closure
For those looking to continue using play structures are encouraged to visit the following parks as an alternative (weather permitting):
- Caverhill Park (Komoka)
- Kilworth Optimist Park
- Komoka Wellness Centre - Playground
- Poplar Hill Park
- Westbrook Park (Kilworth)
