Information provided by the Middlesex-London Health Unit
Ticks are found across Ontario, including the Middlesex London area.
The most common types of ticks found in our area are dog ticks and blacklegged ticks (also known as deer ticks). The latter, blacklegged ticks, are of concern as their bite can spread the bacteria that causes Lyme disease.
What can you do about ticks?
Protect
Take precautions when going outdoors, such as wearing long pants and using an insect repellant that contains DEET. Check yourself and family members for ticks.
Remove
Use tweezers. Grab the tick as close to the head as possible. Pull the tick upwards and away from the body. Clean the area with soap and water. Wash your hands.
Submit
Submit ticks online or to the Health Unit for identification. Tick submissions are accepted year round.
