Wastewater treatment is a critical process to protect public health and the environment. Middlesex Centre is looking to expand the capacity of this vital municipal service in Komoka.

About the Study

The Municipality of Middlesex Centre is completing a Schedule C Municipal Class Environmental Assessment Study for the expansion of the Komoka Wastewater Treatment Facility. This study is being conducted in compliance with the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment process (February 2024), which is approved under the Ontario Environmental Assessment Act.

The Middlesex Centre Servicing Master Plan (SMP) identified the need for the expansion to the Komoka Wastewater Treatment Facility to accommodate projected growth in Komoka/Kilworth. Specifically, the SMP recommended increased sanitary servicing through the construction of a sanitary collection and pumping system which discharges to the Komoka Wastewater Treatment Facility.

The project will examine:

  • Treatment capacity and performance;
  • Site layout to identify any topographic constraints, retaining walls and impacts on natural heritage features;
  • Alternative designs for outfall capacity; and
  • Staging of works to minimize disruption to current operations and to facilitate future phasing.

Resources

Wastewater is a mixture of liquid and solid materials flushed down toilets, sinks and drains. It flows through the municipality's sanitary sewer system to the wastewater treatment plants. There, the wastewater is treated following strict regulations to meet or exceed the standards set by the provincial and federal governments.
